September Mission Focus is Gift of Life Transplant House

posted on September 13

In August, Open Doors UMC began a new ministry called “Mission-A-Month.” Collecting school supplies was our first mission.

September’s mission project is The Gift of Life Transplant House, located in Rochester, MN. It was founded in 1984 and is “a home away from home” for many transplant patients and their care givers. There are currently 84 rooms making it the largest hospital hospitality house in the U.S. 95% of donations support the mission of the GLTH. The cost of a room is $30/night plus a one-time $40 cleaning fee.

Below is a list of items needed at the transplant house. Two of our own church members, Karen Stenzel and Wanda Kothlow, were patients at the house. Karen was there while she had her Bone Marrow Transplant in 1999. Wanda was there when she had her heart pump installed and will be spending three months there following surgery for her heart transplant, whenever her donor heart is available. Karen said, “After a long day of appointments and tests at the clinic, it felt good to come home to the transplant house. It became our second home and the other residents were like family.”

Items will be collected for the month of September. Items can be placed in the entryway tubs marked “Gift of Life Transplant House.”
